Eastern Mexico is in the storm system’s estimated path as it heads from Jamaica toward the Cayman Islands and could potentially reach southern Texas late this weekend.
Hurricane Beryl passed through Haiti on Tuesday and made landfall in Jamaica on Wednesday. “We are expecting the core of a major hurricane to pass near or over the island during the day,” said National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennen.
In its latest report on the growing storm, the hurricane center documented sustained winds of 155 mph and increasing air pressure, tracking the data using hurricane hunter aircraft. The meteorologists also forecasted a storm surge of 5 to 8 feet above normal tide levels around Jamaica, warning the island of the potential damage the increased sea levels could bring.
U.S. weather officials anticipate that Beryl will make landfall in eastern Mexico Thursday night and Friday. Parts of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is under tropical storm or hurricane warnings.
Beryl is the second named storm in the 2024 hurricane season.
